Fighting to preserve family: 2 from single-parent homes build strength in black households

Tammy Greer Brown and Derek Phillips were walking the same life path long before they met. Both grew up without fathers in the home; he in Brooklyn, she in upstate Rochester.
Both grew up without fathers in the home; he in Brooklyn, she in upstate Rochester. Both watched their mothers struggle to provide alone; Phillips' mother died when he was 10, leaving him and his six siblings (three brothers and three sisters) to be raised by their then-26-year-old sister, Bernice - who had three children of her own.
The circumstances of their youth left both Brown and Phillips with a longing for family, specifically the care and nurturing often found in an African-American family. Now, with little or no funding, both have turned that longing into action. Read Full Article
